Turning Your Passion into Profit: Part 3
Hi again! In my previous blog posts in this series, I talked about how you can rediscover a lost passion and what you can do if your passion has gone completely cold and you have no idea what interests you.
By now, I hope you have pinpointed your passion. Once you do, it is possible to turn that passion into a profitable career that not only makes you money but also fills you with purpose.
You just have to figure out how to sell it.The first step is packaging your passion. What do I mean by that? In order to make money, you need to have something that people can buy. This can be something tangible, such as cakes, jewelry, or books. Or it can be a service, such as teaching, coaching, or consulting.
Here are just a few packaging ideas:
- Books or e-books
- Educational video series (online or DVD)
- Patterns and tutorials
- Workshops and webinars
- Artwork (tangible or digital, such as graphic design)
Another way to approach packaging is to think about the role you want to play in your new career. Do you want to be an author who writes, for example, or an entertainer who speaks in front of groups, or a teacher who works with people one-on-one? Perhaps you simply want to be an artist who creates beautiful things.
Don’t limit yourself to one kind of product. The more diverse your offerings, the better. For example, if your passion is gourmet cooking, then you can start by offering a free blog, posting recipes, cookbook reviews, and short how-to videos.
Then, you can write your own recipe e-books for sale, as well as offer a paid series of how-to videos about French cooking. You might even teach an in-person crash course in grilling, where you invite students into your kitchen. See what I mean?
Don’t limit yourself.
Once you know what you’re selling, you need to know where to sell it. The answer simple: the Internet. There's a worldwide audience just waiting to hear about your passion, and you only need to connect with a fraction of that audience to make a profit.
By creating a website or blog and connecting with others via social media, you can easily attract buyers. People have written entire books on how to do this. In fact, my book, “The Rise of the New Professional” discusses how to launch an online business in detail. For now, start with a website/blog, Facebook page, and Twitter account, and go from there.
I hope you're excited about the possibilities out there for your passion. Many of my clients have quit their day jobs in order to make money doing what they love. Even if you aren't interested in turning a profit or switching careers, you can still enjoy the enriching feeling that comes with pursuing your passion.
